TRAUMA INFORMED YOGA

Starting out as a trauma counsellor with a psychology degree, Avalon fell in love with yoga on her own trauma recovery journey. She is now a somatic therapist, using trauma-informed yoga to help adult survivors in their healing, as well as neurodivergent folks and individuals undergoing chronic stress.

Trauma-informed yoga therapy facilitates a kind of rest, relief and healing that can only be accessed through stretching and breathing in a supported, nurturing space.

This kind of somatic therapy blends gentle yoga postures with soft breathwork, visualisation, and mindful awareness to help deep healing to occur. By softening into areas of chronic tension, we can release pain that has been stored in the body's tissues. As well as learning skills for remaining grounded during flashbacks and tough times, releasing that tension helps unwind old patterns of illness and trauma and rewire our nervous system for freedom and joy.

This gentle form of yoga isn't about 'getting it right' - it's about connecting with your body, practising making choices, and rewiring your body to experience empowerment and peace.

People who experience healing through trauma-informed yoga say that they:

  • Often experience deep relief and the sense of coming home to their body

  • Feel lighter and more relaxed

  • Gain the sense of being able to breathe through flashbacks and tough times

  • Have greater sense of control over their body and choices

  • The sense of being able to live life more freely

Avalon usually works with people who have:

  • Complex trauma: a history of childhood abuse and neglect
